Frequently Asked Questions
  • Who is Lou?
Lou is a therapist providing psychotherapy to the general public, affordably. She adopts the Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy approach for the most part, with influences in DBT, ERP, EFT and ACT. She is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, a certified CBT therapist and a certified Mental Wellness Coach & Facilitator. In 2025, she will hold a Masters in Neuroscience and Psychology. • What is the difference between CBT & counselling?
Counselling and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) are both forms of psychotherapy used to address emotional, psychological, and behavioural issues, but they differ in their approaches and techniques. Here's a comparison of counselling and CBT: Counselling: Focus: Counselling typically focuses on providing emotional support, empathetic listening, and helping clients explore their feelings and thoughts about their problems. It often delves into deeper emotional and interpersonal issues. Therapist's Role: The therapist in counselling often plays the role of a supportive, empathetic listener who helps clients gain insight into their emotions and provides a safe space for self-expression. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): Focus: CBT concentrates on the present and how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interrelated. It helps clients recognise and challenge cognitive distortions (irrational thoughts) and develop more adaptive ways of thinking and behaving. Therapist's Role: CBT therapists take on an active, directive role, teaching clients specific techniques and exercises to challenge and reframe their negative thought patterns and behaviours. It's more structured and focused on skill-building.
  • What is my role in ensuring that I benefit from therapy?
Therapy is most effective when both the client and therapist actively cooperate in pursuit of agreed-upon objectives. The client has specific responsibilities that contribute to the effectiveness of therapy. Show dedication: Even though work, social commitments, and life events can compete for your attention, it's crucial to prioritise your recovery. By making recovery a priority, you can ultimately focus your energy and attention on the most important aspects of your life. Attend sessions consistently: Regularly attending therapy sessions is essential for maintaining momentum and ensuring progress. Skipping sessions can disrupt your therapeutic journey and hinder your development. Complete assigned tasks: Homework in therapy can take various forms, from reading about specific topics to engaging in challenging exercises. Homework helps you apply the knowledge and skills gained in therapy to your daily life. It also provides valuable insights to your therapist regarding areas that may require further attention. Collaborate with your therapist: Actively engage in therapy sessions by setting goals and openly discussing what's working and what's not. This collaborative approach allows your therapist to adjust treatment strategies to better suit your needs. Be patient with the process: Change takes time, especially when it comes to altering behaviors and habits. Give yourself a realistic timeframe to observe positive changes, and don't be discouraged if you occasionally revert to old thought patterns and behaviours.
  • How often should I have a session?

  • What assistance can a couples therapist provide?
A couples therapist can provide assistance in dealing with various aspects of a relationship. These may encompass achieving balance in the partnership, enhancing communication and conflict resolution, setting boundaries, improving intimacy and addressing sexual issues, managing parenting difficulties and conflicts involving children, navigating family dynamics, coping with life changes and stressors, addressing work-related setbacks, dealing with matters related to dishonesty or infidelity, handling grief, addressing alcohol or substance use, managing mental or physical health concerns, addressing overall dissatisfaction, and exploring possibilities for separation or divorce.
  • When should a couple consider seeking therapy?
Couples might contemplate counseling when they face relationship challenges that prove too difficult to resolve independently. Typical scenarios that lead couples to pursue therapy include trust issues like infidelity or financial dishonesty, a rise in the frequency of conflicts, communication problems that aren't improving, coping with significant losses or tragedies, a decrease in emotional or physical closeness, and a general feeling that something isn't right in the relationship, even if the exact problem is unclear.
  • Which types of therapy are most suitable for couples therapy?
Lou uses mainly Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy with adaptations from DBT, ERP therapy, ACT and EFT.
  • How can I identify a skilled couples therapist?
A skilled couples therapist focuses on aligning the individual aspirations of both partners, treating the relationship itself as the central client rather than either individual. They work in co-operation with the couple to support them in reaching their shared relationship objectives.
  • Can I get “stuck” in hypnosis?
No. That’s an old wife’s tale. You have complete control the whole time. You can talk, move your body, get a tissue, even get up and leave.
  • How does it work?
Hypnosis is not magic - it is science. It works by lowering your brainwave to the same as when you’re in REM (similar to the mode you're in just before falling asleep/feeling sleepy). That’s what allows you to access the subconscious mind.
  • What if I go back to scenes that are painful or scary?
While going back to scenes in your life that are hurtful, it’s important to remember that you are not reliving that scene, you are simply reviewing it and that you are safe. I will support you and create a safe space for you to express your emotions and heal - you’ll be OK. Scenes to do with sexual abuse will not be regressed.
  • What if I'm not sure that hypnosis will work on me?
That's a needless worry. It's really not important. The depth of trance is not linked to results at all. So don’t get stuck on “Am I deep enough?” or "It's not easy to control me." or "I'm too strong to be hypnotised." or "Usually nothing works for me.". Tell yourself - “This is working.” and it will absolutely work. Just know that it is effective. Feel free to try it for yourself.
  • What if I think I already know the reasons behind my issue?
What makes hypnosis amazing is that even if you think you know the reason, you see it in a completely new or different way when you tap into your subconscious for details. That’s what allows you to change the meaning and ultimately, change your beliefs. And for many clients they go back to scenes that are totally different than what they expected. Just relax and trust that your subconscious mind will show you exactly what you need to see.
  • When will I start to see changes?
There are 3 common types of change from hypnotherapy - every person is different: i. Immediate: You feel a massive shift right away - immediate changes in your physiology, thoughts and behaviors right in the session. ii. Incremental: You see consistent shifts every day, or over time. iii. Retroactive: You don’t see the shifts right away and then one day you suddenly look back and see all of the things that are different in your life.
  • What if I need or want another session?
Hypnotherapy is designed to give you a powerful breakthrough and create big changes in your life. Some clients may need more than one session on a particular issue, depending on how deep it is it can take up to 3. Most want to keep doing sessions to work on other areas of their life and receive coaching simultaneously to integrate the new beliefs and build new habits and behaviours.
  • What does hypnosis feel like?
A light trance/hypnotic state should feel just like relaxation. In fact, you will be more aware in hypnosis. There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis. Many people don’t realise they are in hypnosis until they come out of it.
