Misconceptions about Hypnosis

Updated: May 28, 2023

  • Someone else will control my mind.

  • Hypnosis is about going to sleep.

  • Hypnosis is dangerous.

  • Hypnosis is mystical.

  • Hypnosis is just for stage shows - it's a gimmick.

Here's what hypnosis actually is:

In hypnosis, you will only disclose what you feel comfortable sharing as you will be fully aware throughout the process. Contrary to beliefs, you can't actually get 'stuck' in hypnosis, in the same way that you can't get stuck in sleep. You will remain in complete control the entire time.

Hypnosis is a state you're in. It is the state you're in just before you're fully alseep. A common misconception among clients is that hypnosis involves surrendering control, whereas its true purpose is to assist individuals in reclaiming control over their lives and moving beyond the influence of their pain.

Clients typically seek help because they are unable to enact the necessary changes on their own. The hypnotherapist's responsibility is to guide clients in identifying their desired outcomes and demonstrating how they can harness the power of their mind to address and overcome the issues they wish to resolve. However, clients must be receptive to change for any meaningful transformation to take place.

By learning how to control our mind and thoughts and telling ourselves a better story, we can lay down new neuropathways in our brain. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to form new connections and pathways and change how it is wired.

ABOUT

At The Conscious Mind Psychotherapy, true healing and transformation emerge from a deep understanding of the self—one that honours both the science of the mind and the wisdom of lived experience. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that the mind, body, emotions, beliefs are intricately connected, shaping the way we experience reality.

We embrace an integrative framework that bridges neuroscience, cognitive and behavioural science, and the mind-body connection, recognising that lasting change requires more than just insight. Through therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and somatic awareness, we help individuals uncover how emotional pain is stored in the body, influencing patterns of anxiety, trauma, and stress. By addressing these deep-seated imprints, clients can move beyond symptom management and toward genuine, sustainable relief.

Our practice also integrates secular spirituality, mindfulness, and clinical hypnotherapy, supporting clients in rewiring thought patterns and fostering neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change and heal. We view therapy as a transformative journey, one that not only helps individuals cope but empowers them to reshape their relationship with themselves.
